It is required that you contact the school for each day that your child is absent from school. The following are the options to report an absence:

1. Contact GPUTC on 01733 715950

2. Email –

Where your child has a medical or dental appointment, we require sight of the appointment card of which we will take a copy for our records. It is preferable, where possible, that we know about the appointment as far in advance as possible. Where possible, please make any medical/dental appointments out of school hours.

Request for absence during school term time

The law does not grant parents an automatic right to take their child out of school during term time. If the request is for an absence in term time you must have parental responsibility and be the parent with whom the child normally lives with. Permission must be sought in advance and must be for exceptional circumstances. If you do not have parental responsibility and/or normally live with the child you must seek consent of the parent who does and that person should complete the Absence Request Form which is either available below or from the Administration Team at school. This form should be completed and handed in to school or emailed to a minimum of 4 school weeks before the required date and should include details of any other school age siblings and where they attend school. It is a requirement to make requests for each student to each school. The school will only consider requests from that parent and absence will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances.

When deciding whether to allow term time leave, for any reason, the school will only consider:

  • The reason for the leave
  • The time and duration of the leave
  • Whether or not the leave could have been taken during the statutory school holiday periods
  • Your child’s record of attendance
  • Learning that will be missed

GPUTC students are expected to have an attendance of at least 96%. This figure is reflective of the minimum expectations our sponsors would be looking for if your child were to apply for an apprenticeship with them.

Why Attendance Matters

Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success, both in school and in their working life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behaviour and have a better chance of securing their ideal career path. National studies show that missing only 2 days a month will reduce your child’s exam results by 1 whole grade.

Formal Attendance Process

Students who are not meeting this expectation will initially be supported by the school to increase their attendance. However, if this process is unsuccessful parental engagement will be expected to avoid GPUTC pursuing more formal processes. These could include local authority intervention and fixed penalty notices. If these interventions continue to be unsuccessful, students may be at risk of losing their place at GPUTC. We work closely with the Peterborough Local Authority attendance team to ensure all our processes and procedures match that of the LA.
