Year 10 News - March

Here you will find out what our Year 10 students have been up to this month.

Comic Relief/Red Nose Day

Students across the school engaged in a range of activities in order to raise money for Comic Relief. The main activity was to wear red, students were expected to make a £1 donation in order to wear an item of red clothing for the day. Other activities included a cake sale, a raffle for a cookie cake and samosa and spring roll sale.

 

Raspberry Pi

A small group of students have been undertaking projects with Raspberry Pi’s for their enrichment activities. So far they have managed to fix and reinstall retroPi which enables them to play numerous older games such as Sonic and Mario. The students used the equipment to demonstrate what they had achieved on open day.

The next task they have been given is to design a module that a Raspberry Pi could be mounted to in order to make a flight in a weather balloon with the intention of collecting images and data from the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere.

 

Lunchtime computer club

Mr Akbar runs a Computer club during lunchtimes, for Year 10 and 11, allowing students to excel in Programming and Computer Science revision.  Some students have been working on an Ardiuno project.  

Arduino is an open-source hardware and software company, project and user community that designs and manufactures single-board micro-controllers and micro-controller kits for building digital devices and interactive objects that can sense and control both physically and digitally.'

 

End of Year Reward Trip

The Spring term is reaching an end so looking forward we have asked the students for their views on an end of year rewards trip, so far we have had one suggestion. I aim to take the suggestions given by students to create a student survey where they can vote on their preferred choice. Students will be given the success criteria the week after work experience, if they are successful in meeting the criteria they will be given a letter explaining the rewards trip. I will send out details of the reward criteria so you can help support your son/daughter in meeting the criteria.

 

Work experience

The vast majority of students should have their work experience placements in place and have undertaken interviews. The two week placement will be between 29th April – 10th May (Two week placement) Whilst undertaking work experience students will be required to fill in a work book tracking their experiences and tasks undertaken, alongside this all students will be visited by a member of staff in order to fill in a short survey and to check in on how the placement is going.

Art and Design

Our Year 10 students are currently completing a Black and White abstract project, based on minimalist architectural photography and type fonts. See some examples, below.

Other events/external visitors

Understanding what healthy/abusive relationships are session

Students will be involved in a 'prison is a reality' session to understand what life is like in prison and to dissuade antisocial behaviour

Icash continue to offer sexual health and advice via drop in appointments

Students continue to be supported by CROPS for various mental health reasons
