Perkins Engines Company Limited

A subsidary of the global Caterpillar group, Perkins Engines is one of the world’s leading suppliers of off-highway diesel and gas engines in the 4-2,000 kW (5-2800 hp) market. Based in Peterborough for over 80 years, it employs over 2000 people locally and has an ongoing commitment to supporting schools in Peterborough.

Perkins Engines are supporting the UTC in both Key Stages as another industry partner. Their work with students will cover two very different areas reflecting the diversity of pathways available within the company.  At Key Stage 4 (GCSE) students will be undertaking a manufacturing task. They will begin by machining the part using manual methods and then progress to using the computer controlled machines in the UTC.  They will learn about the methods of quality control used in industry and apply this to their pieces to check they meet the requirements and specification.  In 6th form students will look at the automation used in the factory on the production line and replicate and build one as part of their challenge to undertake a task.
